Craft / Fabric

At TONE DEAF, denim is a craft. Each pair begins with our new 12oz slub denim, developed for its irregular texture and natural variation. It is woven, dyed, cut, stitched, and finished entirely under one roof, giving us complete control over the fabric and the final silhouette.

The Burnt Brown treatment is built by hand through a series of light coatings and painted layers. The process is focused entirely on building depth of color, allowing the brown to shift subtly across the uneven surface of the slub denim.

The more complex our denim treatments become, the more the hand returns to the process. Each pair carries slight differences in color and texture that come directly from the way it was finished. The use of machines doesn’t make the process any less human or complex. Denim, to me, is a poetic process.

You can learn more about the full process on the About page.

The clips shown above are part of the TONE DEAF documentary, filmed on location in July 2025.
