Image Director
The Role
You will shape the visual identity of Tone Deaf alongside the founder.
This is a hands-on image-making role across the full pipeline. Concept, production, shooting or directing, and post. You are not managing editors. You are the editor. You are not overseeing retouching. You are the retoucher.
You concept it, you produce it, you shoot or direct it, you grade it, you deliver it.
The right person is a technically strong image-maker with real taste and creative instinct. You understand how content actually lives. Not just how it looks, but how it is experienced over time. You can think in both narrative arcs across months and collections, and execution at the weekly level.
Some weeks are calm, some weeks are chaos. You need to enjoy both.
What You Will Do
- Concept and art direct shoots from mood board through final delivery
- Scout locations, cast models, and direct on set
- Shoot when needed and direct when needed
- Grade, retouch, and finish imagery in Capture One, Lightroom, and Photoshop
- Edit video for campaigns, social, and brand storytelling
- Build and maintain visual references and mood libraries
- Develop content schedules and narrative arcs across collections and campaigns
- Translate cultural and platform trends into actual creative output
- Manage production timelines and collaborate with external creatives when needed
- Contribute to major brand moments including runway, retail, campaigns, and documentary
What Success Looks Like
- Consistent output of high-quality, emotionally resonant imagery
- A clear and evolving visual language across product, campaign, and social
- Content that performs across both organic and paid
- Systems that allow Tone Deaf to produce at a high level consistently
First 90 Days:
- Establish visual language across channels
- Build a steady content cadence
- Create a system for planning, producing, and releasing content
Technical Requirements:
- Advanced proficiency in Lightroom, Photoshop, and Capture One
- Strong photography ability with the ability to step in and shoot when needed
- Video editing in Premiere, Final Cut, or DaVinci Resolve
- High-level color grading and retouching
- Understanding of production workflows including shot lists, call sheets, and timelines
- Ability to work across formats including editorial, campaign, social, and video
What We Are Looking For
- Based in New York City and available to start by May 2026
- 2 to 4+ years of experience in image-making across brand, editorial, freelance, or independent work
- A portfolio with a clear point of view, not just technical skill but taste
- Deep engagement with photography, film, and visual culture
- Strong understanding of how content is consumed across platforms
- Ability to translate taste into structured output such as calendars, sequences, and systems
- Self-directed, organized, and comfortable in a fast-moving environment
- You make images because you cannot stop making images
What This Is Not
- Not a social media manager role
- Not a marketing coordinator role
- Not a role approving other people’s work
- You are the person making the work end to end.
Compensation
Full-time, salaried. Competitive, with real growth as the company scales.
This is Tone Deaf’s most important year. First runway show, first store, wholesale launch, and documentary. The images created in the next 12 months will define how the brand is seen for years to come.
